Synopsis: Darkling 2022 The Serbs in this remote area are protected by the KFOR peacekeepers, represented by two Italian soldiers (Ivan Zerbinati and Flavio Parenti). They have a warm relationship with the family: Vukica has learned some Italian from a dictionary, and the soldiers can communicate some basic Serbian words. Since most of the time there is no electricity, the Italians charge Vukica phones at their base and bring batteries for transistor radios. Every morning, they took Milica and several other children in their armored vehicles to a convent for elementary school classes. But fewer and fewer children attended every day. The film opens in the darkness of the family’s retirement home: a loud thud from outside and the restless moans of their cows persuade Milutin and Vukica to move the pile of furniture they’ve barricaded the door, to see what happens. Milutin finds the calf dead near the barbed wire fence he has put up, and boots in the mud outside. But the soldiers, whose jurisdiction was limited by miles of red tape, could only take photos and write reports. When a local Serbian official visited the family, it became clear that even their government had abandoned them.
